This month’s The Way I View topic is back to school. My big kids went back mid-August – ages and ages ago! Fortunately, Kieran started preschool in September and I haven’t so much as looked at his back-to-school pictures so I have something to share today. Whew!
And because I love stories, I have a Kieran story for you: The rule at his preschool is that if you want to climb you need to wear tennis shoes. On the first day of school Kieran both wanted to climb but didn’t want to wear socks so he put his tennies on with no socks. He said that hurt so he was going to get a sock and we agreed a sock was a good choice. So he comes down with one sock and two shoes on. Okay then. He walks around a bit and concludes that this still hurts and he’d like two socks on. Fantastic, we say. Two socks is a great idea! So he comes down with two socks on one foot, no sock on the other and his tennis shoes.
At first I thought this was simply funny. I was tempted to go tell him to “fix it” but then I wondered who made it a rule that the only right way to wear socks is one on each foot. I love that in Kieran’s world there are not “truths” about socks! I wonder who we’d all be if we still lived in a world where you could just put both socks on one foot to solve a problem rather than feeling like we need to live by the rules, even if they make our foot hurt! My entire life it never occurred to me to break a sock rule.
Guess I’m never to old to learn something new!
